A Decision

I've decided that there's so many fucked up things in the world, I need to rant once a day to feel better about it all. So, I'm going to find some stupid, fucked up thing and go off on. So... here goes.

"LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, a group of teachers has proposed. Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life. A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children. "We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said. "But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said. The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week."

Ok. What the fuck? First, they say there is no winning and losing in kids sports. Then, they start making kids wear helmets while riding bicycles. Now, kids no longer "fail"? How the fuck is that going to help anything? It's the same principle as the no winning or losing thing. So basically, when a kid grows up after being treated like this his/her whole life, they aren't going to know what the world is really like. I mean, seriously, when I was younger, my pee-wee league baseball team LOST games! We were pissed about that. I hated losing. So, we wanted to get better. And we did. As we got older, we actually improved and won quite a few games. My daughter was playing tee-ball a couple years ago. They got beat badly. I mean, it was ugly. It wasn't even close. One of those kids games that was just painful to watch. After the game, she came up to me said, "Did you see? We tied them." I was shocked. I looked her straight in the eye and told her, "No, hon, you didn't. I'm not sure who told you that, but you lost. It wasn't even close." She looked a little surprised, but it sure didn't demoralize her. It didn't bother her at all. I just told her to keep playing and keep trying and they might win the next one. She just said, "OK", with a smile on her face.

Ok, so back to the not failing in school thing. We're going to teach our children that failing doesn't exist. So, when they get to high school and FAIL, it won't really be failing. When they go to college and FAIL, eh, not really failing. They are just "deferring their success to a later date". WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT? NO! YOU FAILED! DEAL WITH IT DAMMIT! I friggin failed out of college. I FAILED. I didn't fucking defer my success. I was a lazy asshole that didn't think I needed college! And people want to TEACH our kids this is ok?! Damn, I made a mistake on my own. I grew up quick when I was broke and eating Ramen fucking Noodles for dinner every night. Now, people want to encourage our kids that they simply can't fail. My god, this world is in some serious trouble. From here on out, I am being brutally honest with my kids. If they suck at something, I'm telling them they suck. I'll tell them they can certainly keep trying and work on improving, but I'm not going to tell my 7 year old she's good at softball anymore... she's not! She's horrible! That doesn't mean she never will be... but if someone doesn't start telling our kids that they actually need to WORK to be good at something, we'll have a world full of spoiled, not good at anything people trying to run the show. And that isn't going to happen to my kids.

END OF RANT!
